This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to apply a mask to elements within Figma. Masking is a powerful feature that allows you to show only certain parts of an image or shape, effectively creating 'windows' through which the background is visible.

  1. Place Elements – Add the image or object you want to mask and the shape (rectangle, circle, etc.) you want to use as the mask.

  2. Position Shape – Place the mask shape above the image or object in the layer panel and align it to the area you want to reveal.

  3. Select Both – Hold Shift and click both the shape and the image to select them together.

  4. Apply Mask – Press Ctrl + Alt + M (Windows) or Cmd + Option + M (Mac) or right-click and choose “Use as Mask”.

  5. Group Automatically – Figma creates a masked group with the shape hiding parts of the image outside it.

  6. Edit Mask – Double-click the mask group to move or resize the image or the mask shape independently.

  7. Unmask if Needed – Right-click the mask group and choose “Remove Mask” to undo.
